We are currently working on problems related to deterioration of stone, but we will eventually extend our efforts to frescoes and other materials.

    Current projects include:

Salt crystallization pressure

Swelling of clay-bearing stone

Particle-modified consolidants

Surface modification of marble

We also offer an undergraduate course on conservation, CEE105 Lab in Conservation of Art.

Special equipment for these studies is available in our labs.

We participated in the Quark Park exhibition, in which sculptors interpret the work of Princeton scientists. Kate Graves created a work to reflect our research on conservation. Learn more about it here. The table that Kate created has now been installed permanently in front of the Friend Center.
