The Cements Division of the American Ceramic Society has given the Brunauer Award to a paper based on John Valenza’s thesis. The article, “Mechanism for Salt Scaling”, was published as a feature article in the Journal of the American Ceramic Society [89 [4] 1161–1179 (2006)]. The Brunauer Award is given yearly by the Cements Division for the best paper on the topic of cements published by the American Ceramic Society during the previous year. This paper presents a new model that explains the origin of salt scaling of concrete, which is a major contributor to deterioration of the infrastructure. John is now a Research Associate with Schlumberger-Doll in Cambridge, MA.
