Tim Wangler successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis, Conservation of Clay-Bearing Stones: Understanding the Swelling and Damage Mechanisms. This project explained the mechanism by which Portland brownstone expands, how cracks are initiated, and how treatment with diaminoalkanes reduces expansion and damage. This work has resulted in several conference presentations and journal publications. Starting this fall, Tim is a post-doctoral researcher at EMPA in Zurich, Switzerland.
